5 Tips to Turn Your Story Idea Into a Screenplay

To turn a story idea into a screenplay: write a one-sentence logline, define your protagonist’s goal and obstacle, map the main turning points, outline the scenes, then draft quickly without editing. Working in that order keeps you from stalling on page one.

1. Write the logline

Sum up the story in one sentence: who it is about, what they want and what stands in the way.

2. Define the goal and the obstacle

A screenplay needs a character who wants something specific and a force that makes it hard to get. That tension drives every act.

3. Map the turning points

Decide the inciting incident, the midpoint, the low point and the climax. These are the pillars of a three-act structure.

4. Outline scene by scene

List the scenes that get you from one turning point to the next. Index cards or a simple list both work.

5. Draft without editing

Write the first draft straight through. Rewriting as you go is the most common reason first scripts never get finished.
