Is 130 Pages Too Long for a Screenplay?

For a spec screenplay from a new writer, 130 pages is usually too long. Most readers expect 90 to 115 pages, and a long script can be judged before it is read. Established writers and big-budget epics sometimes run longer, but trimming to under 120 pages almost always improves a first script.

What length do readers expect?

Most spec features run 90 to 110 pages. Comedies and horror films often come in around 90 to 100, dramas and thrillers around 100 to 115. A 130-page script is not automatically rejected, but many readers will assume it needs cutting before they turn the first page.

Why does length matter?

One page is roughly one minute of screen time, so 130 pages suggests a film of over two hours. Longer films cost more to make, and producers are cautious about committing to that from a writer they do not know.

Length also signals craft. An overlong first script often has repeated scenes, slow openings and dense description. Readers know this, so a long script starts with a disadvantage.

When is a long script fine?

Established writers and directors make long films, and some stories, such as epics, biopics and large ensemble dramas, genuinely need more room. If you are writing on assignment or for a director who wants a long film, the rules are different. For a spec script from a new writer, aim to get under 115 pages.

How to cut a long script

Start with structure. Look for scenes that repeat the same information or emotion and cut or combine them. Check whether the story starts too late into the script and whether the ending goes on after the climax.

Then work on the page. Trim action lines to the essentials. Start each scene later and end it earlier. Cut dialogue that restates what we have already seen. Remove parentheticals and camera directions that are not needed.

A useful exercise is to cut one line from every page. Over 130 pages, that alone removes several pages without losing any scenes.

What not to do

Do not change fonts, margins or line spacing to reduce the page count. Readers and software both notice, and it breaks the page-per-minute rule that makes length meaningful. Cut the content instead.
